What is That?

There isn’t a day that goes by when I’m out with my dogs that someone doesn’t stop and ask,

“What kind of dog is that?”

I’ve heard every guess imaginable.

Portuguese Water Dog.

Wheaten Terrier.

Spaniel.

Curly-Coated Retriever.

Even a sheep.

I usually smile and tell them, “Yes, sort of.”

Their eyes light up because they think they’ve guessed correctly. Then I explain that they were only partly right.

The truth is that the Australian Labradoodle is unlike any single breed because it was thoughtfully developed over generations to become something entirely its own.

More Than a Lab and a Poodle

One of the biggest misconceptions about Australian Labradoodles is that they are simply a Labrador Retriever crossed with a Poodle.

That may have been where the journey started, but it is not where it ended.

The earliest Labradoodles were first-generation Labrador Retriever and Poodle crosses. While some possessed desirable traits, many still shed heavily, varied dramatically in appearance, and lacked consistency in temperament and coat type.

The goal was to create a predictable, allergy-friendly companion dog with an exceptional temperament.

Achieving that goal required much more than simply crossing two breeds.

Over time, carefully selected bloodlines from several breeds were incorporated into the developing program. The result was the Australian Labradoodle, a dog bred specifically for companionship, service work, trainability, and a low-shedding coat.

The word “Australian” refers to where the breed was developed, not to the inclusion of breeds such as the Australian Shepherd or Australian Cattle Dog.

The Difference Between an Australian Labradoodle and Other “Oodle” Mixes

Today it seems like there is an “oodle” for everyone.

Goldendoodles.

Bernedoodles.

Sheepadoodles.

Aussiedoodles.

Cockapoos.

And dozens of other designer crosses.

While many of these dogs make wonderful pets, most are still first-generation or early-generation crosses between two breeds. Because of this, they can vary significantly in size, coat type, shedding, temperament, energy level, and overall predictability.

For example, Bernedoodles often inherit traits from the Bernese Mountain Dog, including a larger size, heavier bone structure, and sometimes a more stubborn personality. Many Bernedoodles also experience coat inconsistency and can be surprisingly high maintenance when it comes to grooming.

Goldendoodles are known for their affectionate nature, but many owners are surprised to learn that they can still shed and often have very high energy levels.

Australian Labradoodles, on the other hand, have been selectively bred over many generations with the goal of producing consistency. Responsible breeders focus on temperament, health, trainability, coat quality, and predictability from one generation to the next.

The result is a dog that is generally known for being:

Of course, every dog is an individual, but the Australian Labradoodle offers a level of consistency that is difficult to achieve in many newer doodle crosses.
