A Dog Breed Specifically For The Modern Family’s Lifestyle

I didn’t set out looking for an Australian Labradoodle. In fact, I was looking for a Portuguese Water Dog.

At the time, my goal wasn’t simply to own a dog. I wanted a dog I could train and eventually work with in therapy settings. I was fascinated by intelligence, trainability, and the incredible impact a well-bred, well-trained dog could have on people’s lives.

The problem was that many Portuguese Water Dog breeders weren’t interested in placing a puppy in a home that wasn’t actively working the dog on the water. While I respected their commitment to preserving the breed’s original purpose, it left me searching for another option. That search led me, almost by accident, to the Australian Labradoodle. 

Looking back, it was one of the best accidents of my life.

I didn’t grow up with Australian Labradoodles.
I grew up with Spaniels and an Old English Sheepdog. As a young adult, I fell in love with Rottweilers. Each breed taught me something different about temperament, intelligence, trainability, structure, and the relationship between genetics and behavior.

Those experiences shaped the breeder I would eventually become.

For more than twenty years, I have dedicated my life to raising and breeding exceptional family companions. From the very begining my nterested in genetics, inherited traits, health testing, and the responsibility breeders have to continually improve future generations was strong. I helped created the health testing standards adopted by the International Labradoodle Association which later became known as the Australian Labradoodle Association of America. I served several terms on associations health testing commiting, compiling research on the health testing requirements of each of the parent breeds of this wonderful mix. I later served on the board of the Australian Labradoodle Club of America and helped set the same standards for their member breeders. Over a decade later the launch of the Worldwide Australian Labradoodle Association used these clubs as the framework for their new organization. I am very proud of the work I have done with each of these organizations and my continued involvement in the ALAA and WALA.

The more families I worked with, the more I noticed something important.

Most families today are not looking for a dog to perform the job it was originally bred to do. They are looking for a dog that can comfortably live in their world. A dog that can accompany them to soccer games, walk through a crowded farmers market, curl up at their feet while they work from home, greet visitors with confidence, travel well, learn quickly, and become a trusted companion for their children.

They’re looking for a family member!

When I discovered the Australian Labradoodle in the late 1990s, I found a breed whose purpose aligned almost perfectly with what I believed a family companion should be.

The Australian Labradoodle was thoughtfully developed in Australia beginning in the mid-1980s using approximately ten carefully selected parent breeds. While the breed is still considered to be in its foundational development stage, decades of intentional breeding have focused on creating consistency in health, temperament, and appearance. Over the past decade in particular, breeders have made significant progress in stabilizing these traits while remaining committed to the breed’s original purpose: producing intuitive, trainable, adaptable companions for modern families.

That philosophy resonated with me immediately.

The Dogs We Have Today Were Often Designed for Yesterday’s Jobs

Many people never stop to consider why certain breeds behave the way they do.

For generations, breeders selected dogs for very specific purposes. Some retrieved game. Some guarded property. Some herded livestock. Some hunted. Their instincts are remarkable because those instincts were intentionally preserved.

But most families today don’t need a dog to spend eight hours herding sheep or retrieving waterfowl.

Today’s families need something different.

They need a dog that can adapt to everyday life while remaining emotionally stable, eager to learn, and deeply connected to people.

That doesn’t happen by chance. It happens through generations of thoughtful breeding decisions.

What Matters Most at Noble Vestal

Every breeding decision I make begins with four priorities.

Health

Health is the foundation of everything.

We perform comprehensive health testing (OFA Hips, Elbows, Patella, Eye, PennHip) and DNA screening because healthy dogs create healthy bloodlines. Responsible breeding means making decisions that benefit not only today’s puppies, but future generations as well.

Temperament

Temperament is every bit as important as health.

A beautiful dog with poor nerves, anxiety, instability, or low adaptability is not serving the family that loves them. For that reason, we prioritize confidence, resilience, trainability, emotional stability, and a natural desire to connect with people.

Coat

For many families, coat matters.

The Australian Labradoodle’s low-shedding, furnished coat allows many families to enjoy dog ownership who may otherwise struggle with shedding concerns. Predictable coat genetics also help us make thoughtful matches between puppies and their future homes.

Size

Every family is different.

Some want a smaller companion for travel and city living. Others want a larger dog for an active household. The Australian Labradoodle offers size options while maintaining the characteristics that make the breed so special.

Intentional Breeding Is About Responsibility

Good breeding has never been about producing puppies.

It is about producing healthy, predictable, emotionally stable companions that enrich the lives of the families who welcome them home.

Every successful breed in history exists because breeders made intentional choices generation after generation. Today, we simply have access to better tools than ever before. DNA testing, health databases, temperament evaluation, and decades of accumulated knowledge allow us to make more informed decisions than previous generations could have imagined.

Those tools come with responsibility.

And that responsibility is something I take seriously.

My Philosophy

At Noble Vestal, we are not simply raising puppies.

We are preserving and improving a breed that was thoughtfully developed to be an exceptional companion for modern families.

Our priorities have remained the same from the beginning:

Health before trends.

Temperament before appearance.

Predictability before chance.

Lifetime support before the sale.

Because bringing home a puppy is about far more than adding a dog to your household.

It is welcoming a companion who will share your ordinary days, your milestones, your adventures, and your memories for years to come.

And for me, that has always been the entire point.
