Caring for and maintaining your Labradoodle’s coat is a requirement of owning a coated breed
Proper grooming is essential to maintaining a healthy coat and avoiding matting in the Australian Labradoodle. With the correct routine, tools, and professional support, this breed does not require shaving and can maintain a beautiful, manageable coat year-round.
Daily
- Comb and Brush
- Learn to line brush, brushing small sections systematically and then checking with a comb to ensure there are no small mats. The comb should easily glide through each section without getting caught.
- Make sure you brush each area before moving to the next: each leg, armpits, groin, inner thighs, tail, body, ears ensuresing to get behind and under each ear, neck- especially the collar line, muzzle, head, belly.
- Remove eye crust
Weekly
- Clean ears with nothing wetter than a baby wipe.
- Trim nails
- Trim between eyes
- Trim potty area
- Trim paw-pads
Monthly
- Professional bath & blowout
- this should start when your puppy is 12 weeks old
- Every third month professional haircut

Professional Grooming Schedule
It is strongly recommended that your Labradoodle puppy begin professional grooming at 12 weeks of age. Puppies who do not start professional grooming early often develop fear based anxiety while at the grooming salon. This makes grooming for your dog’s lifetime need very stressful. It can also develop into behaviors that are not only dangerous for your dog but also for the groomer. It can also make it difficult to find a groomer who is willing or able to manage your dog safely during grooming sessions. Do your dog a favor by practicing grooming at home from the very first day that he arrives home and scheduling his first groom at 12 weeks and then again every four weeks for the rest of his life.
While owners can bathe and brush at home, most do not have the equipment and or knowledge of selecting the proper products for maintaining the coat. Tips For Maintaining Your Dog’s Professional Groom at Home
- Keep your dog dry, do not allow them to be wet unnecessarily
- Do not bathe at home
- Residential water pressure is not strong enough to rinse soap out of a doodle coat.
- Soap residue left in the coat will attract dirt and cause matting.
- Poor quality store brand products will attract dirt and cause matting. Do not be tempted to use baby shampoo on your dog’s coat, it is not pH balanced for your dog’s skin and coat.
- Do not use detangler on your doodle’s coat. Coat conditioner, polish and detanglers are meant to be used on freshly washed coats prior to drying. Products like Mane & Tail and Cowboy Magic are not appropriate for routine coat maintenance on this breed and are often misused on dry or dirty coats, which leads to product buildup, attracts dirt, and contributes to matting rather than preventing it.
- If your doodle has any size mat this mat will get bigger and tighter when it gets wet.
- Do not jump from groomer to groomer, a good groomer is worth following and sticking with even if they move salons.
- Do not use dematting rakes they strip and break the coat, a broken coat gets matted fast.
